Abstract

The utilization of environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques including barcoding and metabarcoding has revolutionized ecological research for understanding and quantifying biotic interactions, monitoring ecosystem health and dynamics, and addressing current ecological issues. In this study, we discuss the significance of eDNA in biodiversity conservation and environmental management, especially for aquatic fauna in terms of methodology, ecological applications and challenges. Furthermore, current developments in eDNA technology such as integration with machine learning, robotics, remote sensing, and real-time underwater video are also mentioned.
